July '08: The Cabin at Pt. Roberts, WA (a.k.a. WHERE WE GOT ENGAGED!) : I had wondered why Danno was so giddy abhout going to the cabin...and even more giddy about sharing a romantic oceanside sunset after dinner. I can honestly say I've never been more shocked in my entire life as when he got down on one knee and showed me that ring (while I was sitting on the same bench where I had my last cigarette over 4 years ago). I couldn't stop laughing for several minutes, I was so surprised! Curt was hiding in the bushes taking pictures during the proposal! After the hugs and kisses Curt & Sarah had champagne waiting for us at the cabin, and the next few days were full of fun and relaxation. I enjoyed taking Robyn along on my morning jogs, and it was during those walks/jogs that I told a few loved ones our happy news. Add some celebrity gossip rags, a few home-cooked dinners, some Scrabble and cards, and a 2-hr nap with a sleeping child lying on your chest, you've got yourself a vacation! Thanks so much, Watts!

June '08: BC Highland Games & Scottish Festival : Curt & his band Greighlan Crossing compete in BC's Highland Games. My 1st time at the games but it won't be my last. Feb. '08: Robyn @ the Aquarium : 16.5-month-old Robyn & I enjoyed a fun-filled morning at the Vancouver Aquarium. She kept pointing her finger at all the fish and making kissing noises, and shouting "BYE-BYE!" as we left each tank or gallery. She especially liked the sea stars, otters, and dolphins. She was so curious and enthusiastic about each and every creature we visited. Good Times!

Dec. '07: Danno's 30th Birthday SURPRISE! : Little did he know that his best friends & sisters were quietly waiting inside the monster limo that picked us up for our "romantic dinner." I think it's safe to say WE SURPRISED HIM! He finally got what he wanted for his birthday-- the chance to celebrate with friends. And in addition to that, everyone chipped in to give him the gift of his tattoo. Limo ride, dinner at Earls, games and cheesecake at our place afterwards... Godd Times. Happy 30th, Danno!

Nov. '07: Menard Thanksgiving in Minnesota : My first American Thanksgiving in years, and Danno's 1st time. My mom's so cute, she brought some of the pilgrim decorations I remember fondly from my childhood! Poor Danno used up all the Kleenex in Michelle & Bob's house & slept a lot because he was sick all weekend. But we still had a great visit. He played Mr. Fix-It Fairy and repaired some broken doors and sinks and toilets and such, for which he received the ultimate props at the Official Corn Kernel Thankfulness Ceremony. I was THRILLED to have my mom's classic stuffing & Thanksgiving punch as well and some good ol' fashioned garlic mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. And best of all, Michelle's homemade blueberry pie, made with Wisconsin blueberries that I helped pick during our camping trip in August. We also enjoyed swimming at Mom and Dad's hotel pool, some family bowling (who knew Mom was such a pro?!) and ice skating at the olympic-sized Roseville Oval outdoor rink. We also scooped up a few bargains at Target on the famous Black Friday shopping day (after our Thanksgiving night "midnight run" to beat the crowds was a complete failure). And last but not least, the Kingsburys cut down their Christmas tree at the tree farm. Danno and I were very thankful for the complete and utter lack of Thanksgiving Travel Chaos at both the Vancouver and Mpls aiports, even when dealing with customs and border agents. We even got to have one of my favourite Minneapolis breakfasts at the aiport: French Meadow. Gobble-gobble!

Aug. '07: Summer Fun with My Nephews : Outdoor fun with bubble guns, early morning rubber-band military battles, compooter games, tin foil creations ot armour of Action Man and diaramas of Madeline Island cliffs... oh! and family workout sessions. There is simply nothing cuter than all 4 of my nephews unexpectedly joining me in Tae-Bo. They were simply mesmerized by Billy Blanks' muscles. Next thing I know, the 2.5 yr-old and 5 yr-old are doing backwards kicks and crunches alongside me as I cheer them on. "This is self defense, boys! Pretend there's a bad guy behind you! Now KICK HIM!" The older two were more into the jabs and roundhouse kicks. I left one of my Tae-Bo tapes with them since they seemed to like it so much!

Aug. '07: Family Camping at Madeline Island, WI - DAYS 1 & 2 : 3 adults and 4 kids crammed in one minivan packed to the ceiling made the 5-hour drive from St. Paul, MN to the northern Wisconsin shores of Lake Superior, where we took the ferry over to Madeline Island for a weekend of camping with family friends. Nephew #4 was a broked record all weekend, enthusiastically exclaiming, "I CAMPIN'! I campin', mommy!" and "I sleep in TENT!" We did meet some creature friends-- including our campsite mascot Carl the Squirrel-- and even met a couple of tiny snapping turtles on the beach. My sister and brother-in-law are seriously the king and queen of camping breakfast over the fire-- eggs and bacon one day, pancakes and sausage the next. I had the honour of sleeping in the Party Tent with all four of my nephews, sandwiched in between the youngest two. I thought we'd stay up all night telling camping stories but they always passed out as soon as their heads hit the pillows. There were some funny ghost stories told around the campfire by #3 who was on a sugar-high from eating about a bazillion s'mores. Lots of giggles and good times were had by all. We even stopped at a farm in Bayfield on the way home and went blueberry picking! I kept telling my sister I felt like Sally Field in the movie Places in the Heart, as all four boys and three adults were hunched over the rows of bushes, picking berries in the hot afternoon sun. For the younger boys it was all about carefully screening all berries to find the perfect gigantic "MONth-ter" ones. And of course after all that hard work we had to pick up some KFC and listen to The Secret Garden on cd. Because sometimes that's the only recipe for peace and harmony among tired, crowded campers. I'm so thrilled that I was able to tag along for this adventure.

Aug. '07: Introducing "Sneakers" : Charlie's successor, the family's new boxer. The first puppy I've ever known! Check out her pink paw-pads! I am smitten. Full of smit. Can't we give her a pill to make her stay this small and clumsy? She'll be full grown (75 lbs.) in 8-12 months.

July '07: Team WahNerful Goes Camping : With no vacancy at Cultus Lake Provincial Park, we ended up at nearby Vedder River Campground where I camped with Kimmy and the girls a few years ago. This campground is just loaded with all sorts of crazy characters, which made for some hilarious people-watching. We had a bit of privacy the first night, but on Day 2 the caravan of minivans came a-rollin' in... there was even a visit from the ice cream truck! Who knew that sharing a campsite with a multi-generational Korean family of first-time campers could be so much fun? Ah yes, grandparents, sticky rice and steamed buns... and hearing Christmas carols being sung in the morning (seriously). We had to teach them how to make fire, which made us feel very important and S-M-R-T. Regardless, it was great to get away from our compooters and phones and just relax, read, play Scrabble and skip stones in the river. On our last day we resisted the campground peer pressure to join the big horseshoe tournament (there wasn't a non-smoking section at this exciting event) and instead feasted on the Best Burgers Ever at Woody's followed by some beach lounging time at Cultus Lake. Good Times. ***Lesson learned: One must always make reservations for Cultus Lake camping-- even on Thursdays.

June '07: Here Come The Pugs, a.k.a. "The Puppies" or "The Boys." : Ruprecht and Lloyd, my faithful companions for 3 days a week. Ruprecht "is lazy with his self-grooming" which means he doesn't curl up his tail as tight as Lloyd does. I never knew that tail-curling was optional! Ruprecht also tends to have "Billy Idol Lip," exposing a couple of teeth on one side of his mouth. These two puppies add lots of cuddles and humour (and loud snoring!) to my days... I am simply smitten with them.

June '07: Cleo & Miko : Danno & I looked after Liss and Kyle's babies while they were away for a few weeks. Cleo looks (and sometimes acts) like our Itchy-- black with the white spot on her neck-- except Cleo's a bit smaller and only has half a tail. She's very meow-y and has lots to say, and she's also a cuddle-whore. Miko, on the other hand, was scared to death for first couple of weeks and mostly hid under the bed. But eventually she came out, seeking affection and voluntarily sitting on us! I can't believe this little sweetheart is the same violent animal who scratched the crap out of my hand on the first day! Just goes to show you how being patient and giving a scaredy-cat its space can makes it easier for them to trust you. And then you're rewarded with purry cuddles and lap-dances.

Sept. '06: George's Birthday & Farewell Party : The [g]'s parents threw a Chilean-style birthday/farewell party, complete with BBQ steaks, lamb, pork, chicken, corn on the cob, and about six...teen other courses! He turned 33 and then took off the next day for Edmonton, where he'll be working on his master's for the next 2 years. We'll miss you, G-- but at least it's all for a good cause: LONG TERM BENEFITS! Thank god for interwebs. Danno and I gave him a photo album of our shared Good Times over the past few years, so that when he's missing us & Vancouver, he can just kiss our pictures. :) THANKS TO KD FOR THESE PICS!

The hosts did such an amazing job, we almost forgot that we were exhausted from the previous night's bachelor & bachelorette parties! June '06: STARS OF "Y&R" @ River Rock : Menard Girls represent Wisco at a Q&A with the Soap Stars! Unfortunately, no chance for autographs and pictures with them. At least we were in the 5th row, on the aisle-- so I got to ask Nick a question! I told him the characters on the show should not be supporting Cubs, Bulls, Bears, etc. They need to be going to Brewers games and talking about the Packers! Nick jumped up out of his chair and agreed with me enthusiastically! We conversed and had a few seconds of direct eye contact! Also, Nicole and I chanted "MAN-WHORE! MAN-WHORE!" while launching our pointer fingers toward Brad (he didn't see or hear us, though!) After the show, the theatre manager (blonde man in the last few photos) was swarmed by an angry mob of Y&R fans who were furious about the lack of an autograph session and the poor planning of the event! But most importantly, you taught us that one is never "too old" to start living life to its fullest, and to always keep dancing. He was born on April 28, 1908, in the Edgelawn neighborhood of Chicago, to parents Euclide Menard of St. Remi, Quebec and Celia (nee Kaveny) of County Leitrim, Ireland. Pop's older brother, James E. preceded him in death. Pop was there at the birth of the automobile, airplane and telephone, not to mention space travel, nuclear power and cell phones. Technology intrigued him and he was self-taught to understand it all, both at the beginning and the end of the 20th Century. He had a 44-year career with Ma Bell (AT&T), starting at Illinois Bell in downtown Chicago, moving to the worlds of Alaska with Western Electric to build DEW line radar stations, and finishing his working life at New York Bell in the Bronx, New York, where his final assignment was to figure out how to convert New York City from dial to touchtone. He married Rosalie Wardenski in 1932, and had three sons: David W. of Dayton, Ohio, an USAF Master Sergeant and aviation historian and author, H. James (Mary) of Alicante, Spain, a U.S. Foreign Service officer, and Michael Ross (Marita) of Madison, a real estate developer. His second marriage was to Eleanor Baker of New Rochelle, N.Y., a kindergarten teacher. They retired in 1970 and traveled North America extensively in their VW camper, the White Knight. In 1974, they settled near Venice, Fla., where they were invaded annually by the grandkids and spent their time taking care of older neighbors and volunteering in civic groups such as Meals on Wheels. When El's health diminished, they moved to Madison in 1990 to be near relatives. El died in 2001, and Pops moved to Oakwood West independent living apartments in 2004. Pop was active until the end, traveling to Ireland to visit his mother's home, spending New Years Eve in Trafalgar Square, London, visiting with penguins in Antarctica and the Falkland Islands, and cruising the Amazon. He was an active Libertarian and Kiwanis and volunteered with the Alzheimer's Association, Westside Coalition for the Aging, St. Marys Hospital, and Blackhawk Evangelical Free Church, specializing in mailings. He is survived by six adoring grandchildren, Michelle (Robert) Kingsbury of Shoreview, Minn., Lisa of St. Paul, Minn., Nicole of Eugene, Ore., Jennifer of Vancouver, B.C., David of Boulder, Colo., and James of London, England. There are also four great-grandsons, Noah, Zane, Aidan and Max Kingsbury; who will miss his storytelling and simultaneous belly rubbing while sticking out his tongue. He was dearly loved and his witticism and pithy pronouncements will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2006, at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. March '06: Parasailing in Florida, Week 2a : Up, up and a-wayyy in my beau-ti-fullll bal-looooooon... The parasailing veterans: Me, Nicole, and Bob. The First Timers: Danno, Michelle and Noah. The Observers: Granny, Grandpa, Aidan and Max. We flew up in teams of 2, for only about 5 minutes each (instead of 10) because the company was running 45 minutes behind. That's bull kaka! First team: Me and Danno. Second team: Nicole and Michelle. Third team: Noah and Bob. Captiva's one parasailing boat died so we all drove in to Ft. Myers Beach for our parasailing adventure. Saw a few dolphins, got to fly with a Spideyman sail, and even though we completely got ripped off by the parasailing company, it was still an excellent adventure on a gorgeous day in Ye Olde Sunshiney State. Some of the photos taken with a disposable underwater cam were damaged by heat or water, hence the warped colours on a few. Hence, the sepia cover-up. Noah said parasailing was the most exciting thing he'd ever done in his entire 9-year life. His face in the last picture shows it.

Spring '05: Achtung! Construction Zone : In December, they started digging across the street. On March 24, this crane went up... and up... and up, just outside my window. Max Samuel Kingsbury and I have something in common-- we are both the youngest of four siblings of the same gender! My Old Crib (Dec. '04 - May '05) : "The Place With The Money-View." Itchy, Scratchy and I loved watching the traffic, float planes, helicopters, yachts, ferries, and seagulls, and of course, Wheelchair Guy (GABRIEL) doing figure eights in the street. A year from now, this view will be blocked by a 22-storey building. I feel extremely lucky to have lived so close to Stanley Park-- even if it was only for only 5 months. It's the location of an extremely significant chapter in my life.

The Itchy and Scratchy Show : On November 19, 2004, The Cats Formerly Known As Minnie and Maxine were liberated from the SPCA shelter and found a new home with me. Now appropriately named Itchy and Scratchy, these two sisters are still not quite used to each other, since they were separated at the shelter for at least a month. With the help of a cozy, portable cat hut, and catnip, it seems Itchy and Scratchy are slowly remembering how to co-exist. It's been less than 2 weeks, and already progress is being made-- so in a few months, they might be licking each other's faces again. And if not, then I'll just sit back and enjoy the catfights. Scratchy is the scaredy-cat who's always in the hut. She had 2 long strings of drool when we met her, and needed meds for ahwile, which is why she's probably afraid to be held. Her loud "insta-purr" can be heard whenever she is being petted, as long as she's in her cozy hut and feels safe. Itchy is the more outgoing one, the Cuddle Whore who's more likely to sit on your lap or join you in bed. They take turns with the toys and the food, and who knows-- maybe someday Scratchy will invite Itchy to come inside her cozy hut and snuggle. Behold, the power of catnip! Many thanks to Danno for graciously letting them crash at his pad during my Thanksgiving travels and my busy packing & moving week, and for providing these adorable pictures.
